Geometry in the Wild: Maps, Architecture, and Skateparks
See the shapes that build the world.
Difficulty: StandardSee the shapes that build the world.
Geometry in the Wild teaches geometry through the built world—maps, buildings, design, ramps, and real spaces students care about. Students learn angles, triangles, circles, similarity, scale, and measurement by analyzing real environments and making simple plans of their own. Geometry becomes a way to read the world, not just a chapter in a textbook.
We balance hands-on drawing and measurement with just enough formal geometry to make it "real math." Students practice translating between diagrams and reality: measuring, estimating, and using geometry vocabulary to describe what they see. The goal is to build spatial confidence and the ability to reason with shapes.
Students leave seeing geometry everywhere—architecture, navigation, sports lines, design proportions—and feeling more capable when school geometry shows up, because they've already used it in meaningful contexts.
Key Points
- Learn practical geometry: angles, triangles, circles, similarity, scale, measurement
- Use maps and real spaces to strengthen spatial reasoning and visualization
- Practice drawing/diagram skills that support school geometry success
- Build confidence by connecting geometry to things students actually care about
